Okavango Delta Floods Safari

By going on a Okavango Delta Floods safari, you can expect to see a beautiful wetland with vibrant colours, an array of animals, and amazing photography opportunities. The Okavango Delta floods, one of Botswana’s most famous attractions, can be seen from late April to August and turns the Okavango Delta into a paradise for bird watchers. During Botswana’s wet season rainfall causes the river to swell, sending a cascade of water towards the Okavango Delta. The surrounding ebony and mangosteen groves are home to more than 400 different species of birds, including the the African fish eagle, kingfisher and the Pel’s fishing owl. Here’s a guide to viewing the Okavango Delta floods on safari if you wish to see this event for yourself.

When to see the Okavango Delta Floods

The ideal time to see the Okavango Delta floods in Botswana is during the months of May, June, July and August. The Delta flood peaks in August and this is when wildlife viewing is excellent all over the Okavango Delta. August is ideal for first-time visitors, when both water and land-based activities are possible nearly everywhere. The Gcodikwe Lagoon is the perfect location for birders as thousands of herons, egrets and storks arrive and start nesting.

Okavango Delta Catfish Run

Between September and November as the floodwaters slowly recede, the annual catfish run begins. Tigerfish feast around the catfish flow, making for some of the best fly fishing around, but witnessing the catfish run alone is reason enough to travel to the Okavango Delta during these months. Predators and fishing birds are also drawn to the major channels by the catfish feeding frenzy.

Activities and Experiences on an Okavango Delta Safari

Your choice of activities and destinations in the Okavango Delta may be affected by the water levels. One of the best ways to experience an Okavango Delta flood safari is by boat. Mokoro adventures provide for a unique experience on a canoe, expertly guided through the lily-scattered flood-plains. Supporting this venture and travelling on hand-made mokoros are recommended for a Botswana safari.

Our Botswana Sensations Safari includes game drives, guided safari walks in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and mokoro excursions in the waters of the Okavango Delta. Experience the varied landscapes and wildlife of Moremi Game ReserveHwange National Park and the mighty Victoria Falls. Get the best of both worlds and expand your Botswana safari to include the astonishing wildlife wonderland of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe with the 6-day Chobe & Hwange Hideaway. Experience the beauty of the bush on foot, on 4 wheels, or from a different viewpoint on water.
