Kuiseb River
Bordered on one side by barren rock and on the other side some the tallest sand dunes in the world, the Kuiseb River in Namibia is a ‘linear oasis’ that crosses the Namib Desert. This ephemeral river flows from the Khomas highlands west of Windhoek all the way through Walvis Bay – stretching over 400 kilometres from the interior land to the coast.
Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck
Located roughly 400m from the Skeleton Coast coastline, the Eduard Bohlen Shipwreck dates back to 1909 when it was wrecked in a thick fog. Due to it not being submerged, the ship looks like it was left right in the middle of the desert.
Walvis Bay Salt Works
Spanning 3500 hectares, Walvis Bay’s salt pans are among the largest solar evaporation fields on the African continent, converting millions of tonnes of ocean water to salt each year. Depending on the level of evaporation and the corresponding salinity, different micro-organisms are predominant in the pans, changing the colour of the water from green to pink-red and creating vivid colour contrasts.
