Planning your Trip to Uganda

Are you in the midst of planning your trip to Uganda, a remarkable country with a wealth of experiences to offer? If you’re seeking some travel advice, you’ve come to the right place. We have a collection of fantastic Uganda travel tips and recommendations to make your journey even more memorable and enjoyable. Whether you’re curious about wildlife viewing, local cuisine, cultural highlights, or practical considerations, we’re here to provide you with the information you need.

Best time to travel

The optimal periods for observing wildlife in Uganda are during December to February and June to August. These time frames are recommended for your Uganda safari, particularly if you plan to embark on gorilla trekking adventures in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. While birdlife remains excellent throughout the year, the most remarkable sightings occur between November and April when the migrant species are in abundance.

Malaria

Due to the prevalence of malaria-carrying mosquitoes throughout Uganda, it is crucial to take precautions to protect yourself from the disease. Taking malaria medication is highly advised and should be started before your trip, as recommended by your healthcare provider. This medication helps prevent malaria infection and should be taken consistently according to the prescribed regimen.

In addition to medication, it is important to employ preventive measures to minimise mosquito bites. Wearing long-sleeved tops and pants, particularly during the evening and nighttime when mosquitoes are most active, can provide an additional layer of protection. Using insect repellents on exposed skin and applying mosquito repellent to clothing can also help deter mosquitoes.

Currency

The official currency of Uganda is the Uganda Shilling (UGX). Banknotes are available in denominations of UGX 50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000, and 1,000. It is advisable to avoid accepting very old or damaged notes, as some establishments may refuse to accept them.

In addition to the Uganda Shilling, USD dollar, Euro, and Pound Sterling are widely recognised currencies in Uganda. Euros and dollars are commonly accepted for cash payments. Some major cities may also accept other international currencies. It is prohibited to import or export the local currency. However, there are no restrictions on the import of foreign currency as long as it is declared upon arrival. The export of foreign currency should not exceed the declared amount upon arrival.

Foreign currency can be exchanged at the Central Bank, commercial banks, and foreign exchange bureaux. It’s important to note that dollar notes issued before 2006 will not be accepted for exchange in smaller towns.

Food and Drink

In Uganda, it’s advisable to drink bottled water, opt for powdered or tinned milk, and eat well-cooked meat and fish. Cooked vegetables and peeled fruit are recommended. The cuisine reflects English, Arab, and Asian influences, with local ingredients like plantains, sweet potatoes, corn, beans, and cassava. Eating affordably is easy, and Indian, Chinese, and Italian restaurants are popular. Traditional dishes include ugali with groundnut stew, and fish like tiger fish and tilapia. Vegetarian options can be found in Indian and Chinese restaurants. Tipping is not common, but 5-10% tipping is expected at tourist-oriented restaurants and for taxi drivers.

Visas

A visa is required for visiting Uganda, and it is recommended to apply for an eVisa online prior to your trip. The eVisa application will involve a fee payment. Follow this link to apply for your evisa.
