Highlights of Zambezi Valley

Covering a distance of 2.574 km, the Zambezi is Africa’s fourth largest river and the largest east-flowing river into the Indian Ocean from this continent. Beginning in Victoria Falls, this mighty river flows into Africa’s largest man-made lake, the Kariba Dam, before journeying eastward through the Lower Zambezi Valley. Water is the lifeblood of Africa, and so the Zambezi is a superlative location for game viewing. For those looking to discover more of this unique region of Africa, our Zambezi River and Beyond tour takes guests on a 15-day experience. It’s the ideal choice for travellers who want to experience a unique ecosystem. Here are our top highlights of the Zambezi Valley:

Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls is one of the 7 natural Wonders of the World and is a must-see natural phenomena. Victoria Falls, known as “Mosi-Oa-Tunya” (meaning the smoke that thunders), has a number of activities and accommodations to suit travellers from all walks of life. Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, offers a plethora of activities that allow visitors to enjoy a range of thrilling experiences. Adrenaline enthusiasts can embark on a heart-pounding journey through the Devil’s Pool, a natural rock pool located on the edge of the falls, providing a unique and exhilarating swimming experience. For those seeking a more tranquil encounter, a leisurely sunset cruise along the Zambezi River offers breathtaking views of the falls and opportunities to spot wildlife along the riverbanks. Adventurers can enjoy exciting white-water rafting, navigating the wild rapids of the Zambezi. Additionally, helicopter rides and microlight flights provide a magnificent bird’s-eye view of the falls and the surrounding landscape, offering an unforgettable perspective. Cultural enthusiasts can explore local markets, interact with friendly locals, and witness traditional performances, immersing themselves in the vibrant heritage of the region. Whether seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, Victoria Falls promises a memorable journey for all who visit.

Hwange National Park

Situated between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park boasts 105 mammal species and over 100 bird species. Hwange hosts all members of the Big Five, while wild dog and elephant numbers are thought to be the largest in the world. Surrounded by a number of luxury lodges, Hwange National Park offers game activities including walking, driving and horseback safaris. There are three different sections of Hwange National Park – Robins (North West), Sinimatella (Central) and Main Camp (East). Each has its own distinct characters, pans, dominant species and ecology that can be experienced on a game drive in Hwange. The one noticeable and consistent feature throughout the park is the lack of water which means that game congregate around the water holes. Most pans are man-made in a conscious conservation effort for the survival of the park and its inhabitants. Water is pumped into the pans during the dry season, a savior for many species and a big reason for those incredible game sightings on safari in Hwange.

Chinhoyi Caves

The Chinhoyi Caves is the most extensive cave system in Zimbabwe that is accessible to the public. It’s world famous only due to its size, but also thanks to the mystical blue water that fills them. The caves got their name from a local chief who hid there from Ndebele raiders. They are traditionally called “Chirorodziva”, which translated means the “Pool of the Fallen”. Exploring these ancient caverns is a thrilling experience that offers a glimpse into the geological wonders of the region. One can embark on guided tours, led by knowledgeable experts who provide fascinating insights into the cave’s formation, history, and significance. Inside the caves, visitors can marvel at the impressive limestone formations, intricate stalactites, and stalagmites that adorn the chambers. For the adventurous, there are opportunities for cave diving and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Sleeping Pool, a renowned natural feature within the caves. This unique underwater experience allows divers to witness the mesmerizing subterranean beauty, with rays of sunlight piercing through the depths, illuminating the underwater rock formations. Whether it’s immersing oneself in the geological wonders or seeking adrenaline-pumping adventures, the Chinhoyi Caves offer a memorable and enchanting experience for all who venture into their depths.
