Madagascar or Maldives

Island adventures can be had the world over. Choosing which island to go to is a hard decision. While tourist hot spots can be fun, you’re probably going to leave with the same happy snaps and travel tales as all those who’ve gone before you. Choosing something a little less popular can give you new and unique experiences, but also ensures your trip is one you will remember the rest of your life.

We take a look at some of the reasons why you should consider the island of Madagascar over the Maldives. Perhaps you’ll be as excited as we are about this mesmerising island. Yes please, Madagascar!

Nature

When it comes to the raw beauty of Mother Nature, Madagascar ranks a little higher than the Maldives. While both islands have the long stretches of white beach, lapped at by the crystal waters of the surrounding ocean, Madagascar offers an incredible array of fauna and flora that is completely unique to its shores. It’s the only place to see lemurs and fossa – and, in fact, 80% of life in Madagascar is indigenous to the island.

Landscapes in Madagascar range from wild jungles, towering mountain shapes, sandy beaches and everything in between. Whatever your mood – you’ll find somewhere to go and something to see.

Gastronomy

Maldives cuisine is traditionally based on three ingredients: fish, coconuts and starch. One of the most famous dishes on the island is known as “mas Riha” – a curry with diced fresh tuna. It’s a dish you must try when visiting. Madagascar is an ideal destination for any food lover. Malagasy cuisine is a melting pot of diverse culinary traditions that have influenced its development over the last centuries. Trade with Arab, Indian and European throughout the island’s history have enriched its cuisine as a result of the constant introduction of new ingredients and seasonings. If that doesn’t get your mouth watering then we don’t know what will!

Activities

Both islands are idyllic destinations for ocean lovers who enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving in the deep blue. Clear and warm waters make such activities an absolute delight, as does the multitude of species that live underwater. The Maldives offer a variety of activities that visitors can enjoy, but it’s on the island of Madagascar that truly unique experiences await you. Teeming with lush forests, the island has a spectacular collection of national parks that allow you to encounter its biodiversity first hand.

Alternatively, you can hop between islands in a traditional dhow while sipping on a cocktail – pinching yourself to check if you’re dreaming. Night walks unveil an entirely new side to the island where you can watch the playful antics of nocturnal lemurs and other animals. A growing wine industry means you’re able to sample the sweet nectar of the grapes – and possibly bring home a few bottles to serve to your friends as you regale them with tales of your island adventures. With so much to offer, the island of Madagascar certainly packs a punch for travel-lovers from all over – and we can
pretty much guarantee that whatever you’re after, it’s can be found in Madagascar.
