So this year, I was fortunate enough to spend 10 days thinking it was summer in July in Zululand. I must say, nothing beats wearing shorts and a t-shirt in winter! It is psychologically the best thing to get over those rainy winter blues that we experience in colder climates…. For anyone looking to escape to warmer climates like KZN’s north coast, St Lucia is a lovely little spot on the coast nestled in the Greater St Lucia Wetland.
The town offers a number of B&B’s and other types of accommodation, with easy access to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi National Park, The Eastern Shores Game Reserve and Cape Vidal (great place for snorkeling), as well as St Lucia Lake. For those wanting to play a round of golf, the club at Monzi is just a short drive away from St Lucia, or in St Lucia town itself, there are waterslides for the kids, deep sea fishing charters and even whale watching – the best place to see the wonderful and majestic Humpback whales. For a tiny town, it certainly had a great selection of places to eat as well (Ocean Basket, Braza and John Dorys to name only a few)!
One of the highlights of my trip was taking a cruise on St Lucia for game viewing… there are plentiful hippos, crocodiles and not to forget the amazing birdlife too.
My kids loved the river cruise, especially my son Matthew, who is a bit of a clown at times!
