When traveling, most people are constantly looking for sights that will take their breath away. Sights that will make them happy. Sights that will leave them inspired. Sights that will make them feel small. Sights that will remind them how beautiful our world is. And sights that they will never forget.
If you’re also in constant search for these kinds of sights then let me tell you about God’s Window, a landmark which has served as an inspiration for many artists and photographers. As the name suggests, it is a vantage point with divine views. It’s situated in the Mpumalanaga province in the east of South Africa.
As part of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve it offers majestic views over South Africa’s Lowveld and, on clear days, one can see as far as the world-renowned Kruger National Park and to Mozambique. From God’s Window one can see as far as 900 m down into the lush forests of the magnificent Blyde River Canyon, which is also known as the “largest green canyon” in the world.
God’s Window is set along the Panorama Route which offers various viewing points to its visitors. The route is blessed with cascading waterfalls, hills, forests and mountain gorges which can be explored by foot, bike or even on horseback. If you are looking for a more authentic experience and want to leave the tourist crowds behind you, it is suggested that you stock up on refreshments and hike the misty rain forest. You might even encounter one of the various antelope species living at the reserve.
If you have enough time you should also include a visit to Pilgrim’s Rest, the most well-known town in this region. It is referred to as a living museum which will take you back to the days of gold panning in the late 19th century. In the South of Pilgrim’s Rest you can also find the Mount Sheba Nature Reserve, famous for its wide variety of trees, including white stinkwood and yellowwood.
