Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, and climbing Kili is a goal many people have on their personal bucket list!  Kilimanjaro is one of the most magnificent sights of Tanzania, and one of the biggest reasons to plan a trip to East Africa.  Mount Kilimanjaro is the 4th highest of the 7 summits and is often referred to as “Sky Island” for the simple reason that when climbers reach the summit, they are above the clouds, and it looks and feels like being on an island in the sky! Kilimanjaro rises through lush rainforests to alpine meadows and finally crosses a barren lunar landscape to the twin summit.  There are several routes to reach the summit, but the Machame and Marangu routes are the most popular.  Each can be done in less than a week.

Marangu Route

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro on the Marangu Route and enjoy the summit as you overlook the magnificent Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. Marangu Route is an adventurous way to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro and can be done on a 5-day climb… If you are looking for a bit of adventure and a nice challenge, climbing Kilimanjaro along the Marangu route is the perfect option.  Known as the “Coca-Cola route” Marangu is the most popular route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The Marangu route offers you the option of spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain. This extends the route to a 6-day trek and greatly increases your chance of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro.  This route offers accommodation in huts along the way.

Machame Route

Climb Kilimanjaro along the Machame route, using tented accommodation in fully-equipped designated campsites on the slopes of the mountain.  The Machame route is slightly more difficult than the Marangu Route, but a wonderful challenge which will give you the experience of a lifetime. When doing the Machame route, you will be hiking on Day 3 of your Kilimanjaro hike all the way to Lava Tower (4630 m) and then descend by nearly 700 m for an overnight at Barranco camp (3950 m) on the same day (which will assist in acclimatization).  Highlights of climbing Kilimanjaro along the Machame route include the trip through the midst of equator’s jungle to reach the snow and breath-taking views from the summit.
