Southern Skies with Martina: Part 2

Our trip to the Southern Skies part 2: At N’kwazi river lodge we had some time to relax and to just put our feet up. On our way through Etosha13 we made friends with the local boys playing soccer and we were happy to promise that we will send their regards to Michael Ballack when we are back in Germany… We visited the pre school (how many pictures can one take from the these beautiful kids) and we discussed gardening with the women of a local village. Time to see more wildlife again and where can you do this better than in Etosha National Park. We arrived late in the afternoon, the perfect time to see young giraffes “necking” and drinking at the waterhole and Zebras stopping the traffic.

We stayed overnight at Namutoni, and us campers were quite excited about all the jackals who were just too keen to wait around the fire for whatever food was left. The next day was spend on game drives and I just could not get enough from the ever changing landscape, the salt pan where all you can see is the white soil and blue sky.

At our next camp, Okaukuejo we settled in for 2 nights, just enough time to also enjoy the swimming pool and to make friends with our neighbours on the campsite. On our afternoon game drive we got spoiled and spotted our first lions, what a treat. As it was the beginning of the wet season we cooled down a little when it started raining that night, lucky that all our food was already on the braai. We enjoyed our fish, stuffed gemsquash and banana chocolate dessert in the communal kitchen, and how much we laughed. By now we were thick as thieves.

From Etosha we left for Kamanjab and enroute we visited a traditional Himba village. What an incredible lifestyle! Our camp overnight was the unique Porcupine camp and the freshly baked Kaffee&Kuchen, outside showers, and another magnificent sunset made it most memorable. We left with another busy day ahead – and stopped at the Petrified forest with it’s fossilized tree trunks and at the ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. In the afternoon we walked on the foot of Namibia’s highest mountain, the Brandberg to the “White Lady” rock paintings.

While on our Southern Skies trip, we realised there is nothing Namibia does not have! At our lodge, finally.. we had some elephants right in the camp, thank god we were driving in a 4×4. But isn’t that what you come to Africa for? My last night in nature, I was a little sad but another highlight was awaiting us – Swakopmund, the quaint German town in the Namib desert. Popular for it’s adventure sports I could of course not miss out and decided a skydive is just what I need. There are no words! A free fall from 10 000 feet really gives you a different perspective!! What an end for this fantastic holiday; now I am hooked and with a travel bug!
